Going Wilde

Current & Recent Productions

We cannot, unfortunately, hope to list all the productions of the three years when THE OSCHOLARS did not appear, but we will record as many as we can, as well as, of course, listing current productions.  We will continue to do this in future issues of THE OSCHOLARS as long as we continue to turn up instances of productions between 2003 and 2006.  May we ask our far-flung readers to supply any that they remember?  Write to us at:

With the appointment of Michelle Paull as Associate Editor for English Theatre and Tiffany Perala as Associate Editor for American Theatre, we hope to improve our coverage from those countries.  Our other Associate Editors will, as before, provide information from Austria, Australia, Belgium, China, France, Germany, India, Ireland and Sweden.

We are now introducing a new section on this page.  ‘Beyond the Wilderness’  will notice at least a selection of other productions that come within our remit.  Again, we hope readers will help provide information.

Current productions are given as a rolling list, new ones being added each month, old ones being removed on expiry.

Clicking on  will take you to a complete list of all our reviews.

1.  Austria

Information received from Sandra Mayer, Associate Editor for Austria & German Switzerland.

1. The Importance of being Ernest / Ernst ist das Leben (Bunbury)

German adaptation by Elfriede Jelinek after a translation by Karin Rausch

Akademietheater, Vienna (the second out-station of the Burgtheater, Austria's national theatre), Season 2004/2005: Première 18th February 2005 (the play is still listed in the ensemble's repertory, but as far as I can make out, the last performance took place on 9th November, with no further dates announced as yet.  Director: Falk Richter, music: Rocko Schamoni/Jonas Landerschier, lyrics: Rocko Schamoni/Falk Richter.

In the programme for Ernst ist das Leben, Elfriede Jelinek says:

‘Dialogues in theatre I find banal and useless, unless they are by Oscar Wilde. I love Oscar Wilde [...], particularly his comedies. I translated French farces, Labiche and Feydeau, and now I'm translating - together with Karin Rausch - Oscar Wilde, who, unfortunately, is more and more becoming Jelinek, unless there is somebody to save him. In comedies, social conflicts grow more acute, similar to detective novels, which I enjoy reading. They are the outlets through which social pressure noisily escapes. That's just what I'm particularly interested in.’  (Translation Sandra Mayer)

Intriguingly, according to an interview given by Jelinek at the time of the premiere of Ernst, and a short footnote in the aforementioned programme, an adaptation of An Ideal Husband is in preparation as well!! How exciting to pursue this...

Pictures of the rehearsals and performances can be viewed at:

2.  Bunbury oder Wie wichtig es ist, Ernst zu sein

Theater in der Josefstadt, season 2005/2006:

Première: 26th January 2006 (last performance: 27th October 2006), directed by Hans Hollmann.

Despite the fact that in this production all parts are played by male actors, it appears rather conventional, probably in part due to the painstaking detail given to contemporary costume.

Again, pictures can be viewed at:

http://www.josefstadt.org/Theater/Stuecke/Archiv/Josefstadt/Bunbury.html

(The popular Austrian actor Otto Schenk as Miss Prism sports a striking resemblance to an elderly Queen Victoria!)

2.  France

Danielle Guérin, our Associate Editor for French cultural affairs, is compiling a directory of all French productions for our sister publication rue des beaux arts.  This will appeal serially and an amalgamated list will eventually be published in the folder of the Société Oscar Wilde in the webpages of THE OSCHOLARS at www.irishdiaspora.net, where rue des beaux arts is housed.  Greater attention will be paid to French language productions (or English language productions in France) in rue des beaux arts than here in future, but links will be put in place.  rue des beaux arts plans to cover all productions in France and DOM/TOM, French Canada, Wallonie and Suisse Romande and to review as many as possible.

Last month we listed all the productions of the last three years.  Since then, other productions have continued to appear.

3.  Germany

Report from Lucia Krämer.

The Canterville Ghost

There is a new production of Das Gespenst von Canterville at the Schauspielhaus in Bochum. The production, which is directed by Dirk Engler had its première on 23rd November and will run almost daily until 29th December.

The Importance of Being Earnest

The Kammerspiele of the Deutsches Theater in Berlin are presenting a production of Bunbury – Ernst ist das Leben, a German translation The Importance of Being Earnest by Elfriede Jelinek.  The production by Bettina Bruinier, which premièred in April 2006, transposes the action into the present age.  Further performances on 15th November and 26th December 2006.

There will also be a new production of Bunbury at the Landestheater in Detmold, starting on 23rd November. The production is directed by Marcus Everding and will be performed regularly throughout November and December.

One man show

Brian D. Barnes (MBE) presented The Provocative Oscar Wilde at Stuttgart’s Theater der Altstadt im Westen on 21st and 22nd November 2006. Apparently, the evening involves a narration of Oscar Wilde’s life, with an emphasis on its provocative aspects, as well as readings of ‘The Selfish Giant’, ‘Lord Arthur Savile’s Crime’, The Ballad of Reading Gaol and excerpts from Lady Windermere’s Fan and The Importance of Being Earnest.
